What Came Before the Big Bang? The Case for a First Cause

“The Big Bang explains the universe” is where most conversations stop. It is exactly where the interesting question begins. If space, time, matter, and energy all had a beginning — and that is the mainstream reading of modern cosmology — then something about reality follows with uncomfortable force. This is the kalam cosmological argument: medieval in origin, analytic in its modern form, and very much alive in current philosophy of religion.

The Argument, Stated Formally

The kalam argument — named for the medieval Islamic philosophical tradition (kalām) in which thinkers such as al-Ghazali developed it, and given its definitive modern formulation by the philosopher William Lane Craig — has the virtue of being statable in three lines:

1.Whatever begins to exist has a cause.

2.The universe began to exist.

3.Therefore, the universe has a cause.

The logic is airtight — the conclusion follows necessarily if the premises are true — so the entire debate concerns the two premises. Notice, before we defend them, what the argument does not say. It does not say “everything has a cause” (a common misquotation that would indeed backfire against God). It says whatever begins to exist has a cause. The distinction is not a trick added to protect theism; it has been the argument’s precise form for a thousand years, and it is doing serious philosophical work, as we will see when the most popular objection arrives.

Premise 1: Whatever Begins to Exist Has a Cause

This is among the most continuously confirmed principles in human experience — arguably the foundation of rational thought and of science itself. Nothing has ever been observed to pop into existence uncaused, from nothing. Not once. Every experiment, every observation, every moment of ordinary life confirms that being does not arise from non-being. The principle is stronger than an empirical generalization, though: it is metaphysically intuitive in the way “the whole is greater than the part” is intuitive. If things could come into existence from literally nothing, with no cause, there would be no explanation for why anything and everything doesn’t do so, constantly — why bicycles and root beer and universes don’t simply appear, since “nothing” has no properties that could constrain what emerges from it or how often. The utter absence of such events is precisely what Premise 1 predicts, and what its denial cannot explain. It is worth savoring the irony that the skeptic who denies this premise, in order to avoid a Creator, must affirm something no scientist has ever observed and no magician has ever claimed: that a universe can appear from absolutely nothing, by nothing, for no reason. As the philosopher’s quip goes, that is a bigger miracle than the one being avoided — with no one even available to perform it.

Premise 2: The Universe Began to Exist — the Science

For most of history, Premise 2 was the argument’s vulnerable flank: Aristotle held the universe eternal, and so, comfortably, did most scientific opinion into the twentieth century. Then the twentieth century happened. Einstein’s general relativity, applied to the cosmos, predicted a universe that could not be static; Edwin Hubble’s observations confirmed the galaxies receding; and the resulting standard model of cosmology traced the expansion backward to an initial state of unimaginable density roughly 13.8 billion years ago — the Big Bang. Crucially, on the standard model this was not an explosion of matter into pre-existing space, like a bomb in an empty room. It was the beginning of space and time themselves. There is no “before” in the ordinary sense, because “before” is a temporal word and time itself is among the things that began. When a TikTok comment asks “what was there before the Big Bang?”, the standard model’s startling answer is: there was no then then.

Cosmologists have proposed models to avoid an absolute beginning — eternal inflation, cyclic universes, multiverse scenarios — and this is where the most important theorem of the debate enters. In 2003, Arvind Borde, Alan Guth, and Alexander Vilenkin proved that any universe which has, on average, been expanding throughout its history cannot be past-eternal: it must have a past boundary. The theorem’s power is its generality — it does not depend on the details of gravity or the contents of the universe, and it applies to most multiverse and inflationary models as well. Postulating a multiverse, in other words, does not escape the beginning; it relocates it. Vilenkin — who is not a religious believer, and whose testimony is therefore worth double — has written with unusual bluntness that cosmologists can no longer hide behind a past-eternal universe and must face the problem of a cosmic beginning. Premise 2, once the argument’s weakness, is now supported by the mainstream reading of the physical evidence.

Premise 2: The Philosophy — Why the Past Cannot Be Infinite

The kalam tradition never rested its case on physics alone, and its older, purely philosophical arguments still stand. The first: an actually infinite number of things cannot exist in reality. Mathematicians work with actual infinites as concepts, but transplanting them into the concrete world generates absurdities — the famous illustration is Hilbert’s Hotel, a hotel with infinitely many rooms, all full, which can nonetheless always accommodate infinitely many new guests by shuffling occupants, so that “full” and “room for more” become simultaneously true. A beginningless universe would require an actually infinite number of past events to exist in reality — and reality, the argument holds, cannot contain such a thing. The second argument is sharper still: even if an actual infinite could exist, it could not be formed by successive addition — one event after another. To arrive at today after traversing a literally infinite past is like trying to finish counting down from infinity: for any point you reach, infinitely many steps still had to precede it, so the countdown could never have reached any point, let alone this one. But here we are — today arrived. The past, therefore, is finite. It is worth noting that these arguments predate modern cosmology by a millennium; the physics did not create the conclusion, it caught up to it.

From Cause to Creator: Why the Cause Must Be Personal

Grant the conclusion — the universe has a cause — and the deduction continues, because we can read off what the cause must be like from what it caused. The cause of space cannot be spatial. The cause of time cannot be temporal — it must be timeless, eternal. The cause of matter and energy cannot be material. It must be beyond nature (supernatural, in the word’s exact sense) and unimaginably powerful, having produced the totality of physical reality from no pre-existing material.

But the step most treatments rush past is the most important one: the cause must be personal — a mind with a will. The reasoning is elegant. Ask: how can an eternal, changeless cause produce an effect that is not eternal — a universe that is only 13.8 billion years old? If the cause were an impersonal, mechanical condition (like freezing temperature causing ice), then whenever the cause exists, the effect exists; an eternal impersonal cause would have produced its effect from eternity, and the universe would be eternally old. It isn’t. The only kind of cause that can be eternally present yet produce a new effect is an agent — a being with freedom of will, who can choose to create. A force does not decide; a Someone does. The argument thus terminates not in a physical principle but in an uncaused, timeless, spaceless, immaterial, unimaginably powerful personal Creator. Which is why the first sentence of the Hebrew Bible reads less like ancient mythology every decade:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 (NIV)

Of all the cosmologies of the ancient world — eternal cycles, world-eggs, gods hatching from pre-existing chaos — the Hebrew account alone opens with an absolute beginning of everything, caused by a transcendent personal agent. Modern cosmology did not have to converge on that structure. It did.

Objection 1: “Then Who Created God?”

This is the internet’s favorite reply, popularized by Dawkins in The God Delusion, and the answer has been sitting in Premise 1 the whole time: whatever begins to exist has a cause. God, by definition and by the argument’s own conclusion, never began — the deduction itself established that the first cause must be timeless and therefore beginningless. Asking what caused a beginningless being is asking what caused the uncaused; the question malfunctions, like asking what is north of the North Pole. Nor is this special pleading, for a simple reason: something must be eternal and uncaused, on pain of nothing existing at all. If there were ever a state of absolute nothingness, nothing would exist now — from nothing, nothing comes. Since something exists now, something has always existed. The only question is what: the universe, or something beyond it. And that is precisely the question Premise 2 answers — the universe, by the physics and the philosophy alike, is not the eternal something. The argument does not exempt God arbitrarily; it demonstrates that the eternal something must lie beyond space, time, and matter. As the psalmist had it: “from everlasting to everlasting you are God” (Psalm 90:2, NIV).

Objection 2: “But Quantum Physics Gets a Universe from Nothing”

The strongest-sounding scientific reply comes from proposals like Lawrence Krauss’s A Universe from Nothing (2012): quantum fluctuations can produce particles — perhaps universes — from “nothing.” The decisive point, made not primarily by theologians but by Krauss’s fellow scientists and by philosophers of physics, is that the “nothing” in these models is not nothing. It is the quantum vacuum: a physical system with energy, structure, and governing laws — a rich something, presupposing the very framework of physical reality whose origin is in question. The philosopher David Albert’s review of Krauss in The New York Times made the point with some heat: relativistic quantum field theories tell stories about how the fields rearrange; they say nothing whatsoever about where the fields, or the laws, came from. Redefining “nothing” as “an unstable quantum something” does not answer the question why is there something rather than nothing? — it repeats it one level down. The same applies to quantum-gravity proposals such as the Hartle–Hawking “no boundary” model: whatever their merits, they describe the universe’s earliest state in terms of pre-existing mathematical law and structure, and a law is not nothing either. The question of the absolute origin remains exactly where the kalam locates it: outside physics, because physics is among the things that began.

In the Interest of Honesty

Four concessions the skeptic deserves. First, physics before the Planck time (the first 10⁻⁴³ seconds) is genuinely open science: general relativity and quantum mechanics have not been unified, and any claim about the universe’s earliest state — including ours — outruns settled physics to some degree. The BGV theorem is powerful but not unchallenged; some cosmologists explore models designed to evade its assumptions, and the honest summary is that a beginning is the mainstream reading, not a proven theorem about reality. Second, Premise 1 has real philosophical critics (notably Graham Oppy and Wes Morriston), and the debate over causal principles and the metaphysics of infinity is technical and ongoing — the kalam is a live argument in the journals, which cuts both ways: it hasn’t been refuted, and it hasn’t compelled universal assent. Third, quantum indeterminacy does complicate naive versions of causality — though indeterministic causation is still causation; virtual particles emerge from the vacuum, not from nothing. Fourth, and most importantly: even at full strength, the kalam delivers a timeless, spaceless, powerful, personal Creator — it does not, by itself, deliver Christianity. That further case runs through other arguments and, ultimately, through a tomb outside Jerusalem. This post argues for the first step only, and we’d rather claim one step honestly than the whole staircase cheaply.

The Conclusion of the Matter

Follow the evidence where it runs. Nothing that begins is uncaused — the most confirmed principle we possess. The universe began — by the mainstream verdict of the physics and by philosophical arguments a millennium older than the physics. Therefore the universe has a cause: beyond space, beyond time, beyond matter, powerful beyond category — and personal, since only a free agent can be an eternal cause of a non-eternal world. The skeptic’s remaining alternatives are to assert that the universe popped into being from absolute nothingness, uncaused — a claim with no evidence, no mechanism, and no precedent — or to relabel “nothing” until it quietly becomes something. Between a Creator and a contradiction, reason is permitted to choose the Creator. What came before the Big Bang? Nothing physical — and that is exactly the point. In the beginning, God.
